Pancakes, anyone?

I’ve only been a Rotarian for a couple of months now, but I’ve quickly learned that members of the organization love an excuse to get together and eat. Naturally, I fit right in.

In previous years, the North Fresno club has held multiple fundraising events to support its local giving programs. This year, however, the group decided to consolidate efforts into two main events: an annual pancake breakfast at Fig Garden Village, and the Storyland and Jazz dinner and auction. This morning I got up at 5:00 a.m. to help setup for the pancake breakfast.

Based on last year’s attendance, about 1,200 people were expected for breakfast. For the athletically ambitious, there were a couple of runs, and many of the area merchants opened their doors at 7:00 a.m. with special sales. The breakfast started at the same time, with a line 100 people deep.

By 8:00, the line was dwindling, and several people remarked at the good turnout. But just as we started to think about filling our own plates, more people came. And more people after them.

I had to leave at 9:30, but I’m guessing, based on silverware setups, that we served at least 1,500 people.

It’s a good deal, especially considering the amount of money raised: a $7.50 ($10 at the door) ticket received, two to three pancakes, three pieces of sausage, a fruit cup, juice and coffee.

About James (R.) Collier

My thoughts are somewhat random, as I still don't know what I want to be, when I grow up (if you've got any ideas, I'm open for suggestions). For now, I'm resolved that somewhere inside of me there's an artist, suppressed by a fear of someone else's perception, unwilling to accept the thought of being unaccepted.
